What's with cannabinoids?

Even if you have never consumed cannabis, you might be familiar with the terms CBD and THC.  Both are classes of chemical ingredients known as cannabinoids… which are natural elements found in the Cannabis family of plants.

With more than 480 natural compounds found in the cannabis flower, about 20% of them are identified as cannabinoids… cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) are the most well know.

Without digging too deep into the science, Endocannabinoids, also called endogenous cannabinoids, are molecules produced by our bodies which bind to matching receptors to stimulate the internal endocannabinoid system (ECS.)  ECS is a necessary process that keeps our internal functions running smoothly.

The process works the same in all mammalian organisms - humans and animals alike.  If you feel good, ECS is running as it should… If you don't, something is missing or malfunctioning.

When hemp is consumed, the cannabinoids in the plant repair ECS by compensating for any deficiencies and, in turn, provide comprehensive wellness, therapeutic relief… and yes, if THC, one of these cannabinoids, is consumed, the molecule binds to ECS receptors in the brain to produce psycho-recreational effects.

Although scientific research is still unlocking and discovering new beneficial uses for these molecules, below are a summary for some of the most well-known, and researched, cannabinoids and their effects:

Cannabidiol (CBD) known for its therapeutic and medicinal uses is exceptionally safe, and unlike its cousin, THC does NOT cause psychoactive effects. In addition to its pain management and anti-inflammatory properties, CBD is emerging as an effective treatment for PTSD, depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia.  CBD has also shown promising results as an effective tool for fighting cancer and controlling seizures.

CBD and Anandamide… a love story.

Anandamide, also known as the 'bliss molecule,' is an ECS messenger similar to Neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are agents of the nervous system.

The molecule is involved with appetite, memory, and mood regulation.  Have you ever heard about the runner's high?  Well, anandamide is involved.  THC and CBD are potent propagators of the 'bliss molecule'; however, of the two, CBD is a better suitor.  Not only is CBD non-psychoactive (does not get you high), it has a two-pronged approach to promoting anandamide:

(1) by stimulating the endocannabinoid system

(2) inhibiting other molecules that metabolize anandamides… in a way, it protects the 'bliss molecule' from being broken down and discarded.

CBD benefits are most pronounced in higher concentrations, and therefor its Isolate form is preferred for maximum effectiveness. Indicalm's 'Elemental Hemp' is a rich source of the hemp-derived CBD isolates.

Cannabinol (CBN) is beneficial in relieving pain and has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.  Unlike other cannabinoids, CBN relieves pain through an entirely different pathway than other molecules… making it a potent substance when pain management is not possible through traditional routes.

CBN and other cannabinoids are present in Indicalm's line of 'Full-Spectrum Hemp' products.

Cannabigerol (CBG) is the precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized.  As a non-psychoactive compound, CBG's long list of benefits, including killing (or slowing) bacterial growth, reducing inflammation, has been shown to inhibiting cancer cell growth and promote bone growth. CBG and other cannabinoids are present in Indicalm's line of 'Full-Spectrum Hemp' products.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the primary psychoactive element present in the Cannabis plant and is responsible for the "stoned feeling" associated with marijuana.

THC binds to CB1 receptors present in the brain to produce a euphoric high feeling.  The chemical reaction results in a sense of calmness, enhanced sensory perception, and increased appetite.

(To be clear, Indicalm family of products DO NOT contain THC and are non-psychoactive.)

More research is yet to be done for unlocking the myriad of benefits associated with cannabinoids; however, one thing is sure - any deficiencies in the body cause misalignments, inefficiencies, and disease.  These plant-derived essential elements help to compensate for some of these vital deficiencies and help renew the internal mechanism to its natural homeostasis.

For targeted and therapeutic benefits, we recommend Indicalm's Elemental Hemp line of products and for complete rejuvenating wellness Indicalm's Full-Spectrum Hemp.
